USCIS Confirms that New Passport Card is Acceptable for I-9 Purposes
- United States
- 08/14/2008
A new U.S. passport card is in full production across the United States. The new card provides a less expensive and more portable alternative to the traditional U.S. passport book, and will expedite document processing at U.S. land and sea ports-of-entry. The new passport card may only be used by U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda – it is not acceptable for international air travel. As the passport card confirms both the identity and U.S. citizenship of the bearer, it may be used as a valid “List A” document, which may be presented by newly hired employees during the I-9 employment eligibility verification process. The new passport card may also be accepted by employers participating in the E-Verify program. Instructions on applying for the new passport card can be found on the State Department’s website.
