Brazil, United States Strengthen Cooperation to Exchange Information

On July 22, representatives of Brazil’s Federal Revenue Department (FRD) and the US Department of Homeland Security met with the purpose to strengthen cooperation to exchange information in international trade practices. The agreement in customs matters, signed by both countries in 2005, allows developments in terms of fighting and preventing customs fraud in international trade between the two countries.
During the meeting, Brazilian and US authorities discussed issues such as modernization of customs systems, use of integrated system for risk management, exchange of information and use of non-invasive equipment for customs control and inspection. Participants included FRD Chief-Commissioner Jorge Rachid, FRD Deputy Secretary Clecy Lionco, US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and US Customs and Borders Protection (CBP) Assistant Commissioner Mike Mullen, among others.
